How We Evaluate KI Products

TL;DR: We evaluate every KI product through a 5-step process: FDA status verification via DailyMed, manufacturer background research, analysis of 500+ Amazon reviews, historical price tracking, and shelf life verification. We don't accept free products from manufacturers. Rankings update monthly.

Our Philosophy

We're picky because you might need to bet your family's safety on these products someday. Every pick on our site goes through the same rigorous evaluation — whether it's a $50 bottle of FDA-approved tablets or a $15 supplement. We don't have "sponsored" recommendations or "partner" products. If it's on our list, it's because we'd buy it ourselves.

Here's exactly how we research each product.

Step 1: FDA Status Verification

The first thing we check is whether a product has FDA drug approval for radiation emergencies. This isn't optional research — it's the foundation of our rankings.

We verify FDA status through multiple sources:

  • DailyMed: The FDA's official database of approved drug labels. We look up each product by name and NDC number to confirm approval status.
  • FDA KI Approval List: The FDA maintains a specific list of approved potassium iodide products. We cross-reference against this.
  • Orange Book: For products claiming therapeutic equivalence, we verify in the FDA's Orange Book database.

Only two KI tablet products currently have FDA approval: iOSAT 130mg (Anbex) and ThyroSafe 65mg (Recipharm/BTG). One liquid product is also approved: ThyroShield Oral Solution (Fleming & Co). Everything else is a dietary supplement, which means it's manufactured under different quality standards and has not undergone FDA review for safety and efficacy.

We don't dismiss supplements outright — some are perfectly fine products. But we make the regulatory distinction crystal clear in every review.

Step 2: Manufacturer Research

A product is only as trustworthy as the company behind it. We dig into every manufacturer's background:

  • Company history: How long have they been in business? What's their track record with quality control?
  • Manufacturing standards: Do they operate cGMP-certified facilities? For supplements, this is voluntary but important.
  • Third-party testing: Do they publish Certificates of Analysis (COAs) from independent labs?
  • Regulatory actions: Any FDA warning letters, recalls, or import alerts?
  • Contact verification: Can we reach a real person when we call? Do they respond to emails?

For iOSAT, we confirmed directly with Anbex that they hold the original 1982 FDA approval and currently supply the US government's Strategic National Stockpile. For supplement brands, we verify their business registration and look for red flags like frequent name changes or virtual office addresses.

Step 3: Amazon Review Analysis (500+ Minimum)

We analyze every single review for products with sufficient volume — typically 500 to 5,000+ reviews per product. We don't just look at the star rating. We read.

Our review analysis looks for:

  • Quality complaints: Broken tablets, crumbling pills, inconsistent coloring, unusual odors
  • Packaging issues: Damaged seals, missing expiration dates, poor foil sealing
  • Counterfeit concerns: Reports of suspicious products, packaging discrepancies, or efficacy doubts
  • Seller problems: Expired products, third-party sellers with poor ratings, commingled inventory issues
  • Verified purchase patterns: We weight verified purchases higher and look for suspicious review clustering

This process takes 6-8 hours per product. We've caught problems that aren't obvious from the overall rating — like a supplement with 4.5 stars but multiple recent complaints about tablet consistency, or an FDA-approved product with counterfeit warnings tied to specific third-party sellers.

Step 4: Price Tracking

Amazon prices fluctuate constantly, and "sales" are often just psychological tricks. We track historical pricing for every product we recommend.

We use price tracking tools to monitor:

  • 90-day price history: What's the actual typical price vs. the "list price"?
  • Seasonal patterns: Do prices spike during nuclear news cycles? (Spoiler: yes, they do.)
  • True per-dose cost: We calculate cost per adult dose (130mg), not just cost per bottle
  • Multi-pack value: Is the 6-pack actually cheaper per dose, or just more expensive overall?

Our price ranges reflect what you should typically expect to pay. If a product is currently priced significantly above its historical range, we note it. We also watch for stockouts, which happen regularly with FDA-approved products during geopolitical tensions.

Step 5: Shelf Life Verification

Shelf life matters for a product you might store for years without touching. But manufacturer claims don't always match reality.

For each product, we verify:

  • Manufacturer-stated shelf life: iOSAT claims 10 years, ThyroSafe claims 6-7 years
  • FDA guidance: The FDA recommends replacing KI after the expiration date, though the NRC notes KI is inherently stable
  • Stability data: We look for published stability studies, particularly for supplement products claiming extended shelf lives
  • Packaging impact: Foil-sealed individual tablets (iOSAT) vs. bottle storage (most supplements) affects longevity

We're skeptical of supplement brands claiming 10+ year shelf lives without published data to back it up. The FDA-approved products have undergone formal stability testing; supplements typically haven't.

What We Don't Do

Our independence matters. Here's what you'll never see from us:

  • No free products: We don't accept free samples from manufacturers. Every product we review, we buy anonymously through regular retail channels — just like you would.
  • No sponsored content: We don't write "reviews" that manufacturers pay for. Our revenue comes from affiliate links, not manufacturer relationships.
  • No pay-for-placement: Manufacturers can't buy their way onto our lists. Rankings are determined solely by our evaluation criteria.
  • No uninformed opinions: If we haven't researched it thoroughly, we don't write about it. We don't publish first impressions or unboxing videos masquerading as reviews.

How Often We Update

We review our top picks monthly and full rankings quarterly. We also update immediately when:

  • A new FDA approval is announced
  • Significant safety issues emerge
  • Products are discontinued or reformulated
  • Pricing changes dramatically

Every page shows its last updated date. If you see something that looks out of date, let us know.

The Bottom Line

We spend 40+ hours researching each product category so you can make an informed decision in 10 minutes. Our methodology is designed to surface the products we'd trust for our own families — nothing more, nothing less.
